Safety on a road trip is important to any traveler. After years of family road trips I have learned there are certain things that can make the trip safer and more comfortable for the entire party. I hope that you find this helpful and if you are doing any traveling this holiday weekend, have a safe trip.
Road Trip Safety Tip #1 – Be sure to have the mechanic check the car before leaving. Have all standard services performed such as oil change, lube, break check, etc.
Road Trip Safety Tip #2 – Check with the auto insurance to be clear on what coverage is being carried on the auto and that it is sufficient.
Road Trip Safety Tip #3 – Be sure to have towing on your auto insurance or carry Triple A for their services such as trip planning and towing.
Road Trip Safety Tip #4 – Be sure that there is an up to date insurance card and registration in your automobile.
Road Trip Safety Tip #5 – Make sure to have your families health insurance cards in a safe place. Also dental and vision cards if those are different carriers.
Road Trip Safety Tip #6 – Be sure that all credit cards and important paperwork is kept in a safe place. Do not leave them in a motel room or in your automobile.
Road Trip Safety Tip #7 – Be sure the driver of the automobile understands all driving laws in the states that traveling will occur. For example, some states allow left hand turns on red lights from a two way street to a one-way street if traffic is clear.
Road Trip Safety Tip #8 – It is always a good idea to have a GPS on board for directions when traveling on the roads and highways in states that are unfamiliar to you. This way the chance of becoming lost or entering an unsavory area of town is less likely to happen.
Road Trip Safety Tip #9 – Stay in hotels that are not off the beaten path. Such as a hotel that you know is well known. It can be unsafe and if you do sign into a hotel that makes you uncomfortable then by all means leave and find a new one for the night.
Road Trip Safety Tip #10 – Always carry your cell phone with a car and room charger so that it has a full charge at all times. Keep a phone list written in the car and in your phone of emergency contacts in case of an accident or a need for them. On your emergency list keep medical information of medications and doctors names and phone numbers for each family member.
